Preparing for a Fundraiser

Writer's picture: Unwound Beyond the LabyrinthUnwound Beyond the Labyrinth

Crowdfunding is not an easy task. You either find yourself begging friends and family for money, or praying you have enough fans of your work that they will spread the word, leaving you with hundreds of small donations that add up to a big way to thank the cast and artists for their time and talents.

But more often than not, things go okay. Some people donate, some can't, you reach a plateau, you get a total. Just like how not every work goes viral. Still, that doesn't mean it's not worth trying. And who knows? Maybe the algorithms will grant us luck.

I think more than money, I would like to accomplish more visibility for this piece. We just passed 100 followers on YouTube, which is both huge and a comparative drop in the bucket on a YouTube scale. It's so hard to not compare oneself to others, particularly in the arts.

Which is why I think as we prepare to launch on December 1st, there are some things I want to keep in mind:

  1. The people who want to give and can give will give. They will give their time and their hearts if that's what they want to share. No one should be stretching past their limits

  2. Dream big, but also set limits. There are only so many hours a day we can put into this project, and I want those hours to feel as exciting as they do now.

  3. Access and Empathy are primary goals in this and in all I want to do as an artist. That includes giving care to myself as well as others. If we become too focused on the bottom line, we will need to do some major course correction. Which is why

  4. Checking in constantly is a priority. We should always be conscious of the space around us and learning how to be more conscientious of our presence and effect on it. De-centering isn't the answer, and getting defensive won't help us learn. It is a practice, so let us practice: with patience and acknowledgment of all the little mistakes along the way.

If you have any questions about Unwound: Beyond the Labyrinth or its upcoming Indiegogo Fundraiser this December 1st-January 20th, please reach out and let us know.

Stay safe, stay warm, be loved.
